Glyphosate, microbiome, and humic substances: What is established, what is plausible?
Executive Summary: Since 2015, glyphosate has been classified by the IARC as "probably carcinogenic" (2A). European authorities (EFSA/ECHA) currently do not classify it as carcinogenic; a re-evaluation is ongoing. Data on the gut microbiome show disturbances in animal and in vitro models; human findings are heterogeneous. Humic substances (humic acids, fulvic acids) bind pesticides, metals, and mycotoxins in vitro/in vivo animal models and can reduce glyphosate excretion. Glycine supplements via GSH synthesis and potential competitive effects. Clinical human efficacy data are limited, but the biological plausibility is high.
1) Regulatory evidence regarding glyphosate
· Cancer assessment: IARC 2015: Group 2A "probably carcinogenic" (limited evidence in humans, sufficient evidence in animals; genotoxic signals). (IARC)
· EU assessment: EFSA 2015 and peer review 2023: no cancer classification recommended; ECHA-RAC 2022 similar. A new review is being discussed for 2025. (European Food Safety Authority)
👉 Classification: The divergence between IARC and EFSA/ECHA is due, among other things, to evaluation frameworks, datasets, and weighting. Clinically, exposure should be minimized, and biomarkers/exposure pathways should be addressed.
2) Microbiome and glyphosate
· Mechanism: Inhibition of EPSP synthase in the shikimate pathway affects bacteria; potentially selective effects on commensals vs. opportunists.
· Data status: Reviews and animal studies report dysbiosis, reduced microbial tryptophan production, and altered diversity at doses close to the ADI. Human data are inconsistent. (PMC)
🧠 Practical use: Support microbiome recovery, lower exposure, and consider adsorptive strategies.
3) Humic substances: Binding, barrier, biotransformation
Humic acids (HA)
· Binding: Non-covalent interactions with glyphosate; adsorption/chelation of metals and organic xenobiotics. (PubMed)
· In vivo evidence: In cattle, oral administration of humic acids reduced urinary excretion of glyphosate; immunological effects were observed simultaneously. (ResearchGate)
· Liver protection: HA + β-glucan protected against liver toxicity in an animal model. (PMC)
Fulvic acids (FA)
· Transport & Redox: Low molecular weight, membrane-permeable, redox-active; supports mineral transport and phase I/II pathways (preclinical).
· Microplastic interaction: Humic substances bind micro/nanoplastics and can alter their behavior and bioavailability. (ScienceDirect)
4) Glycine: small amino acid, big leverage
· Detoxification: Substrate for glutathione synthesis → antioxidant, cellular detox axis.
· Microbiome/Autonomic: Anti-inflammatory, vagotonic effects described.
· Glyphosate reference: The concept of competitive interaction with EPSP targets is discussed; direct clinical evidence is limited. (For review context, see microbiome above.) (PMC)
5) Quick overview: Fields of action & mechanisms
- 🧫 Gut & Microbiome: Barrier film, ↓ Leaky gut, ↓ putrefaction, ↑ Lacto/Bifido (preclinical).
- 🧪 Detoxification: Adsorption of glyphosate, metals, mycotoxins; microplastic binding. (PubMed)
- 🔋 Mitochondria/Redox: FA is redox-active, glycine → GSH.
- 🧯 Inflammation: anti-inflammatory effects of humic substances in preclinical models. (PMC)
6) Practical tips for intake 🍽️
- Form: Capsules or powder stirred into water for mucosal contact.
- Timing: after meals for toxin binding and better protein utilization.
- Interval: 1–2 h away from medications.
- Combinations: with lactoferrin, zinc, selenium, prebiotics depending on the goal.
